JRS Japan based
& overseas visiting members are welcome to join our weekend tour of
the Kisei Main Line from Nagoya to Osaka. Please contact our Chairman,

JRS members based in the UK (and those who maybe visiting) are welcome

- 10th February 2024: Annual JRS Japan New Year’s Meeting
Our
annual new years meeting will be held in the Shinagawa area of Tōkyō
from 13:00. As usual we will have refreshments after the
meeting. Please contact Anthony Robins, Stephen Turner or our Webmaster
for further

- 2nd December 2023: Anthony Robins will give a
presentation at The Model Railway Club, Keen House, 4 Calshot Street
(near Kings Cross station), London N1 9DA. Starts at 14:00.
- 2nd - 7th
November 2023: The 4th Railway Art Salon Photo Exhibition will be held
at the Gallery Michikusa (14th floor, Fujikyu Building East No. 5 Wing,
Minami Ikebukuro 2-25-5), 5 min walk from Ikebukuro Station (same
building as Maruzen Ikebukuro Branch). Open 11:00 to 19:00. The
organisers are happy to welcome JRS members to this exhibition. The
exhibition will have photographs taken by around 75~80 persons from
throughout Japan including many vintage photos. Some photographs taken
outside of Japan by Japanese photographers may also be exhibited. For

- Late October - Early November: JRS Veterans Tour
After a 5 year hiatus from the COVID pandemic, the Veterans are
returning to Japan. The tour is open to all paid JRS members. There
will also be opportunites for Japan based members to meet the Veterans.

August 2023: Evening get-together with Locomotive Club of Great Britain
(LCGB) tour participants during their tour of Japan. Contact Anthony

annual new years meeting will be held at a new location this year near
Sengakuji Station (Toei Asakusa/Keikyu Lines) in the Takanawa area of
Tōkyō. Meeting starts from 14:00. We will have refreshments after the

join. There will not be a zoom option for this meeting.
- 26th - 27th November 2022: JRS Japan Members Bōnenkai
After a 3 year hiatus, the traditional end of year weekend tour is
back. JRS Japan Members are invited to join us for an end of year
get-together in the Takasaki area. Contact our webmaster or JRS
Japan co-ordinator for more information about how to join.
- 10th - 11th
September 2022: JRS Japan Oigawa Weekend Tour - JRS Japan based
members are welcome to join our weekend tour to the Oigawa Railway. The
tour will be based from Shizuoka, and have opportunities to visit other
operators in the area. Please contact our Japan representative Anthony
Robins, if you are interested in joining.

August 2022: Doki Doki - The Manchester Japanese Festival. The JRS will
have a stand at the Doki Doki Manchester Japanese Festival. It
will be held at the Sugden Sports Centre, 114 Grsovenor Street
Manchester M1 7HL. This is a ticketed event. Further information about the event and ticketing options can

- 16th
July 2022: JRS Annual General Meeting. After a 2 year hiatus, the JRS
AGM returns to the Model Railway Club, Keen House, 4 Calshot Street
(near Kings Cross station), London N1 9DA. In addition to the usual
discussion points will be a presentation by Anthony Robins. U.K. and
European Members who wish to join in person, and members outside the
U.K/European countries who wish to join via Zoom please contact our

- 2nd July 2022: Japan Day in Liverpool.
The JRS will have a stand at the Japan
Society North-West's Japan Day Exhibition. It will be held at the Liverpool Guild of Students,
which is located within the University of Liverpool's campus, 160 Mount
Pleasant, Liverpool L3 5TR. Admission is free. Further information can

days in the Kyōto area, particularly focussing on travel by Keihan.

January 2022: Annual JRS Japan New Year’s Meeting, returns this year as
a hybrid event. In person attendance at Tōkai University Shōnan Campus,
lounge on the 10th floor of new building no. 19,

final year on site at Tōkai University. The meeting will also be
conducted on Zoom for members based outside Japan or who prefer not to

- 7th
November 2020: Paul Backhouse’s N Gauge Tohoku City will be at Padiham
Model Railway Event at the Padiham Unitarian Chapel Hall next to the
Memorial Park in Knight Hill, Padiham, Lancashire, BB12 8JH. Doors are
open from 10:00 until 16:00. There is a modest car park, but ample free
parking is available at other nearby car parks.
- 17th
October 2020: Peter McConnell will make another appearance with his Z
gauge Nippon Tetsudo at Abingdon MRC’s show at Didcot Civic Hall,
Britwell Road, Didcot, Oxford-shire OX11 7JN. Opening times are 10:00
till 17:00, and there is free parking on site. The venue is around 11⁄2
miles from Didcot Parkway station.
- 26th September 2020: Nippon
Tetsudo will also be at Tring MRC’s TaD-rail 2020, one of their two
annual exhibitions. This one is held at the Cottesloe School, Aylesbury
Road, Wing, nr. Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, LU7 0PD. Doors are open
from 10:15 until 16:30 and there is free parking.
- 19th
September 2020: Peter McConnell’s Z gauge Nippon Tetsudo is scheduled
to appear at Loddon Vale MRC’s Earley Exhibition to be held at St.
Peter’s Church Hall, Church Road, Earley, Reading RG6 1EY. The venue is
on two levels, of which the upper one is unfortunately not accessible
to wheelchair users. It is half a mile from the station and, although
parking is limited, there is ample free parking in neighbouring side
streets. Buses also stop close to the venue. The show is open between
10:00 and 16:30.

Our
AGM for 2020 was postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. A

10/11/2019: The JRS Society stand together with the N gauge layout
Hironochō will be at the annual Doki Doki Japanese Festival at Sugden
Sports Centre, 114 Grosvenor Street, Manchester, M1 7HL. Opening hours
are 11:00 until 17:30 on both days. Advance tickets are available
online at £12.50, with proceeds going to Aid for Japan which supports
orphans of the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami.
- 02/11/2019:
Sankei Valley makes another appearance at Wycrail ’19 at the Cressex
Community School, Cressex Road, High Wycombe, Bucks., HP12 4UG. This
popular one-day show is well worth a visit. There is extensive on-site
parking and doors are open from 10:00 until 17:00.
- 19/10/2019:
It is back to Sankei Valley for Abingdon MRC’s show at Didcot Civic
Hall, Britwell Road, Didcot, Oxfordshire OX11 7JN. Opening times are
10:00 till 17:00, and there is free parking on site. The venue is
around 1½ miles from Didcot Parkway station.
- 13/10/2019: Peter McConnell will be
taking his Z gauge layout Nippon Tetsudo to Oxrail, incorporating
Zedex, Oxford MRC’s annual show at Abingdon & Witney College,
Wootton Road, Abingdon, OX14 1GG. Doors are open from 10:30 till 16:00,
and there is free parking at this wheelchair-friendly venue.

22/09/2019: JRS Chairman Peter Dibben will be at Leigh MRS’s exhibition
with his N gauge Hironochō at St Joseph's Hall, Chapel Street, Leigh,
WH7 2DA. Opening times are 10:00 till 17:00 on Saturday and 10:00 till
16:00 on Sunday.

- 15/09/2019: There are no Japanese layouts at the International N
Gauge Show this year, but Mr. Hiroshi Kato, President of Kato Models,
is scheduled to attend on both days. The venue is the Warwickshire
Event Centre, Leamington Spa, CV31 1XN. Doors are open from 10:00 till
17:00 on Saturday and from 10:00 till 16:00 on Sunday
- 10
August 2019: Peter McConnell resumes the exhibition trail by taking
Sankei Valley to the Silver Fox DCC MRC’s exhibition. It is a large
show held at Oakgrove School, Brickhill Street, Milton Keynes, MK10
9JQ. Doors are open from 10:00 till 16:00. There is free parking and
the venue is a mile from the Central station.
- 18
June 2019: This time it is the turn of Nippon Tetsudo again, now at
Global Rail, the annual exhibition with an overseas slant organised by
the German Railway Society. The event is at Didcot Civic Hall, Britwell
Road, Didcot, OX11 7JN with doors are open from 10:30 until 16:30.
There is free parking on site at this popular venue which typically
hosts two or three model railway shows each year
- 11 May 2019: JRS Annual General Meeting
The Model Railway Club, Keen House, 4 Calshot Street (near Kings Cross station), London N1 9DA. Starts at 13:00.

May 2019: Peter McConnell is out on the circuit again, this time with
his Z gauge Sankei Valley at South West Herts MRS’s annual exhibition
at Queens School, Aldenham Road, Bushey, Watford, Herts., WD23
2TY. This is a substantial show with
more than 20 layouts on one level for easy access, and doors are open
from 10:00 till 16:30. The venue is served by a choice of railway
stations and is accessible from both the M1 and M25 and has free
on-site parking. You might be able to drop in on your way to the JRS
AGM in London on the same day

March 2019: Peter McConnell will be taking his Z gauge Nippon Tetsudo
to Swindon MRC’s Modrail 2019 at the STEAM museum, Firefly Avenue,
Kemble Drive, Swindon, SN2 2EY. Doors are open between 10:00 and 16:30
withparking available at the nearby Swindon Designer Outlet North public car park.

- September/October 2018: JRS Veterans Tour

- Saturday 1st September 2018, Current Developments with railways in Japan, with Anthony Robins
14:00
– 17:00, at Magdalen Hall, St. Mary’s Church, Eversholt Street (near
Euston Station), London. From the station, leave by the exit nearest
Platform 1 and turn left. The church is about 400 metres on the
right. There will be an opportunity for something to eat and drink
after.
- 14th - 16th July 2018: JRS Japan Members Northern Tōhoku Tour
Japanese
based members are invited to join our informal tour of railways in
Northern Tōhoku. Visiting, non Japan based members are welcome to
participate if they are in the country at the time. Please get in touch
with our Webmaster for further information.
- 3rd June
2018: Not strictly a model railway exhibition, but
there will be a JRS presence at the Japan Day in Manchester organised
by the Japan Society North West. We plan to have a stand with a
layout (Hironocho is provisionally pencilled in, but if any member in
the area has a modest sized layout that they would like to be
considered please contact the Chairman – details inside front
cover). The event will be at the Sugden Sports Centre, 114
Grosvenor Street, Manchester M1 7HL from 11:00 - 5:30, and admission is
free.

May 2018: - JRS Annual General Meeting - 12:30pm at the Model Railway Club, Keen
House,4 Calshot Street, London, UK.

members welcome to attend. The meeting will be followed by model
demonstrations and drinks at an external location.
- 12th
May 2018: Currently, the last planned outing for
Peter McConnell’s Z gauge Sankei Kansen 2 is at South West Herts MRC’s
annual exhibition at Queens School, Aldenham Road, Bushey, Watford,
WD23 2TY. With more than 20 layouts booked to attend, this is a
show worth travelling a little further for than usual, although you
will miss the JRS AGM if you do! Doors are open at 10am, so you
just have time for a quick look round on your way to the AGM, and show
closes at 4:30.
- 10th
March 2018: The Modrail 2018 show organised by Swindon MRC at the
Steam Museum marks the debut of another new Z gauge layout from Peter
McConnell under the (not very) original name of Nippon Tetsudo.
The venue is in Firefly Avenue, Kemble Drive, Swindon, SN2 2EY which is
10 minutes’ walk from the railway station from which buses will take
you to the Great Western Designer Outlet, where there is also ample
parking. Doors are open from 10:00 - 4:30.
- 17th
March 2018: Just a week after its debut, Nippon Tetsudo makes its
second appearance at Abrail, the one-day extravaganza organized by
Abingdon & District MRC. The new venue for this
well-established show is at Abingdon & Witney College, Wootton
Road, Abingdon, OX14 1GG and doors are open from 10:00 - 5:00.
- 7th
April 2018: Kamahashi Kikanku will be at the N Gauge
Society Berkshire Area Group’s Open Day at Sindlesham Baptist Church
Hall, opposite Sindlesham Green on Bearwood Road, Sindlesham, RG41
5BB. Doors are open from 10.00 - 4.00 and, as you might expect,
all layouts on display are N gauge.
- 21st/22nd
April 2018: Peter Dibben has an outing with his N
gauge Hironocho at the Liverpool Model Railway Exhibition, to be held
at The Ian Robinson Sports Centre, Merchant Taylors' School, Liverpool
Road, Crosby, Liverpool, L23 0QP. Doors are open on Saturday from
10:00 - 17:00, and on Sunday from 10:00 - 4:30. Adult admission is
£5.00 (£4.50 if retired).
- 29th April
2018: Peter McConnell will be at Globalrail 2018, the show
organized by the German Railway Society at Didcot Civic Hall, Britwell
Road, Didcot, OX11 7JN with his Z gauge Nippon Tetsudo, Doors are
open from 10:30 – 4:30 and there is free parking on site.
- 17th February 2018: Roger Comber will have
his steam preservation depot layout in N gauge Kamahashi Kikanku at the
East Reading show in aid of the Cholsey & Wallingford Railway at
The Warehouse, 1a Cumberland Road, Reading RG1 3LB. Doors are
open from 10:00 till 16:30 and there is free on site parking for this
small local show. The venue is about a mile and a quarter’s walk
from Reading mainline station or you can take the local bus to Cemetry
Junction.
- 25th November 2017: For the final exhibition of
this year, Peter McConnell’s Sankei Kansen 2 will be at
Letchworth MRS’s annual exhibition at Etonbury Academy, Stotfold Road,
Arlesey, Bedfordshire SG15 6XS. Doors are open from 10:00 till
16:30. There is free on site parking and Arlesey station is less
than a mile away
- 11th November 2017: Peter Dibben’s N gauge
layout Hironocho (featured in Continental Modeller) is at Doki Doki,
the Manchester Japanese culture event where we will have a Society
Stand. This will be held at the Sugden Sports Centre, 114
Grosvenor Street, Manchester M1 7HL, from 10:00 until 19:00.
Proceeds from the event go to Aid for Japan which provides long-term
support for orphans of the 2011 Tohoku disaster in Japan. More info at:

- 7th
January 2017 - Peter McConnell is making his first appearance of the
New Year with Sankei Kansen 2 at Marlow, Maidenhead & District
MRC’s annual exhibition at the Cox Green Community Centre, 51 Highfield
Lane, Maidenhead, SL6 3AX. The show is open from 10:00 - 17:00
and there is a limited amount of free parking on site.
- 14th January 2017 - Peter McConnell will have his Z
gauge Sankei Kansen 2 layout at the NMRA’s Annual Winter Meet at Benson
Village Hall at Sunnyside, Benson, Wallingford, Oxfordshire, OX10
6LZ. Doors open 10:00 - 16:00.
- 22nd January 2017 - Ian Milroy’s N gauge Kuritu line
will be on show at Astolat MRC’s annual exhibition at The Surrey Sports
Park, University of Surrey, Richard Meyjes Road, Guildford, Surrey, GU2
7AD. This is a new venue for this well-established show, and for
the first time there is ample free parking. Doors open 10:00 -
17:00.
- 11th February 2017 - Peter McConnell will be at Milton
Keynes MRS’s 2017 Exhibition at Stantonbury Leisure Centre, Milton
Keynes. MK14 6BN with his Z gauge Sankei Kansen 2. Doors are open from
10:00 till 16:30.
- 25-26th February 2017 - The final public appearance of
Ian Milroy’s Kuritu line at Solent MRG’s Eurotrack event at Oasis
Academy Lord's Hill, Romsey Road, Southampton, SO16 OXN. Opening times
are 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturday and 10:00 till 16:40 on Sunday.
- 11th March 2017: Peter McConnell will again have his
Sankei Kansen 2 at Swindon MRC’s Modrail 2017 at the Steam Museum of
the Great Western Railway, Fire Fly Avenue, Swindon, SN2 2EY.
Doors are open between 10:00 and 16:30 with parking available at the
nearby Swindon Designer Outlet North public car park.
- Late September ~ Early October 2016 - Veteran's Tour
Our
annual informal 'Veteran's Tour' was held later in the year than
normal. The format was the same as previous years' in that it was
not a formally organised nor an escorted one, but a group of members
travelled together at their own expense. The area of focus for this
year's tour was the Chūgoku & northern Kyūshū areas. Contact
our Webmaster or Chairman for further information about the next tour.

- The turn of Sankei Kansen at Hope Methodist Church’s Model Railway
and Bygone Days exhibition at Rushden Academy, Hayway, Rushden,
Northants., NN10 6AG. Profits will go towards funding a new
Methodist Centre in Higham Ferrers. The show is open from 10:00
until 16:00, and there is free parking available.
- 09/04/2016
- Peter McConnell brings his Sankei Valley layout to Luton MRC’s
biennial exhibition at Stopsley High School, St. Thomas’ Road, Luton,
LU2 7UX. Doors are open from 10:30 until 17:00 with parking on
site.
- 24/03 - 11/04/2016 - The JRS provided assistance to the Railway Touring Company's Japan 2016 tour.
- 12-13/03/2016
- Peter McConnell’s Z gauge Sankei Valley layout is at Basingstoke MRCs
annual Model Rail exhibition at Aldworth Science College, Western Way,
Basingstoke, Hants., RG22 6HA. Peter assures me that he is able to
manage this without the aid of a Tardis (see previous entry) as the
layout will be in the charge of his regular assistant on the Saturday
while he is at Swindon. Doors are open from 10:00 until 17:00 on
Saturday, and 10:00 until 16:00 on Sunday, and there is extensive free
parking for this large show with two dozen layouts and 26 traders
already booked.
- 12/03/2016
- Peter McConnell is exhibiting Sankei Kansen at Swindon MRC’s Modrail
2016 at the Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway, Fire Fly Avenue,
Swindon, SN2 2EY. Doors are open between 10:00 and 17:00 and the
Museum is open throughout the show, so it is well worth considering
visiting both on the same day. Parking available at the nearby
Swindon Designer Outlet North public car park.
- 20/02/2016
- Risborough & District MRC’s Risex 2016 is the venue for Peter
McConnell’s next outing with his Sankei Kansen, at the Community
Centre, Wades Park, Stratton Road, Princes Risborough, HP27 9AX.
Doors are open from 10:00 till 17:00 and there is a public car park
opposite the venue.
- 20/02/2016 -
Nick Harling’s Kanjiyama appears at Tonbridge MRC’s annual exhibition
at the Angel Centre, Tonbridge, TS9 1SF. The show boasts over 30
layouts and is open from 10:00 till 17:00. There is extensive public
parking available around the venue which is a shortwalk from the railway
station.
- 31/01/2016 - JRS Japan Member's New-Year Meeting

JRS get-together at the Ruislip Lido Railway
(Willow Lawn Station) at 13.00. Willow Lawn is convenient for the car
park (end of Reservoir Road) and can also be reached by bus H13
(half-hourly) from Ruislip Station
(Metropolitan Line). We will have a ride on the railway and visit
the workshops before time for refreshments and conversation.

Society North-West's Japan Day Exhibition which will be held in

- 24/05 to 07/06/2014 - JRS Veterans Tour
This years tour will focus primarily on
Hokkaido and a few 3rd sector lines in Aomori Prefecture.
In addition,
there will be an opportunity to meet the tour group and Japanese based
members in the Kanto
region on Saturday 7 June.

is a demonstration of modern Japanese N gauge modelling & will

Station to the show.

- 08/12/2012 - JRS Member Dan Free's Lecture on railways in the
Meiji-era (Tokyo JRS Members-Only Event)
2:30pm at the Hitotsubashi University
Railway Society, Hitotsubashi University, Kunitachi, Tokyo.
This lecture is being held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the
Hitotsubashi University Railway Society and financial JRS members have
been invited to attend. The subject matter will be similar to the

Meiji-era (Osaka Open Lecture)

New York based member Dan Free is conducting a lecture about the
Meiji-era railways and their impact on the rapidly rising economy of
the period. This event is open to the general public and more
information can be obtained by contacting Dan by email or to Hirosji

- 17/11/2012 - Royston Model Railway Club Annual Exhibition
2 miles north Royston on A1198 (towards
Huntingdon). Left at Kneesworth crossroads along The Causeway, about 1
mile to far end of village. Kneesworth/Bassingbourn are linked villages
with no obvious split. Exhibition organised by Royston MRClub with an
excellent tradition of over 20 years of this annual show, usually held
in Royston; this year for 1st time in the new venue. Layouts in various
gauges and origins including less seen aspects of the wonderful
railways of Japan, much of which originates from their British roots
(an inexpensive book 'Japanese Railways in the Meiji Period, 1872-1912'
(£6) in 40 pages fully describes the British origins will be available
for purchase).
- 19/07/2008 - Japan Day in Liverpool
The event was held in Mountford Hall of
Liverpool University, which is the University Guild of Students
building at the top of Brownlow Hill, the street to the immediate right
of the landmark Adelphi Hotel. It was opened by the Japanese
Ambassador who was welcomed by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool (and, we
hope, the University Vice-Chancellor).
