It's been a while since we've looked at monorails on our photo's of the month. We get 2016 going with a selection from Oliver Mayer of monorails past & present in the Nagoya area.
Meitetsu’s ‘Monkey Park’ monorail in Inuyama (Aichi prefecture) was the first ALWEG monorail in Japan. It opened in 1962, but closed at the end of 2008 due to aging infrastructure and a reduction in passenger numbers. This photo was taken on 15th May 2008 at Naritasan station (the Naritasan temple can be seen in the background).
Two cars of Meitetsu’s monorail have been preserved in the Monkey Park, at the former Monkey Park station (building on the right). The former depot (background) has been transformed into a car park. 10th October 2011.
A Safege-type monorail operated in Higashiyama Zoo in Nagoya from 1964 to 1974. A new monorail, called the ‘Sky View Train’, opened within the zoo in 1987 and is still running, photographed here on 28th June 2015.
